Review: Fight Club (Film)

Plot summary

Fight Club is the story of an insomniac who is disillusioned with life in 1990s USA. Suffocated in his white-collar job and surrounded by Starbucks, Coca Cola, and Scandinavian furniture from catalogues, his mind fabricates Tyler Durden. Rebelliously individual and adventurous to the point of peril, Tyler is free in all the ways our narrator is not. Together they form an underground fight club, where other ‘trapped’ men can step out of their emasculated selves to brawl with each other. Upon realising that Tyler is his own alter ego, our narrator attempts to halt the escalating violence and foil a terrorist attack of his own design.

Murray's Road to the Final

Novak Djokovic may have had the fortune to find himself on the opposite side of the original draw to Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, but Withdrawal Wednesday at Wimbledon yesterday left Murray with the clearer run to the final. The Scot's highest seeded potential opponent before the final is clay court specialist Nicholás Almagro [15] after Federer [3], Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [6], and Marin Čilić [10] were all sent home in the second round.

Up a River without a Paddle: Trenton Oldfield

Trenton Oldfield, a 37 year old Australian activist, will appeal against the Home Office ruling that he must leave the UK. The protester entered the Thames in April 2012 to disrupt the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in a demonstration against elitism and government cuts. He was recently ordered to leave the country after being given a six-month jail sentence. As a supporter of the Dark Blues, I was quite annoyed when the race was disrupted while Oxford commanded a slender lead. After the re-start a stroke of misfortune saw an Oxford rower break his oar, leaving Cambridge to claim a comfortable victory. But I did not call for Oldfield’s banishment from this land (at least not seriously!) for his disruption of our sacrosanct tradition.

Sir Alex Ferguson to Retire

End of an Era

Sitting at my desk at university, looking over at the Manchester United scarf hanging above my bed, it is proving difficult to process the idea that the club I have grown up supporting will not be managed by Sir Alex Ferguson next season.

A Review of Frank Turner's New Album, Tape Deck Heart

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Here is a short review Dom and I (with the help of Jez) wrote one night.

Frank Turner’s use of Nirvana’s immortal line in his new album is more than a homage to 90s grunge; it is symptomatic of a theme coursing through the veins of his Tape Deck Heart: adolescence.  The work is an uncharacteristically profound exploration of  heart-break and bitterness, laced with disillusionment and cynicism.  And it’s delicious.

And all these little things

Before beginning the ‘article proper’ I feel it necessary to state that this post has absolutely no tie, bond, or estranged familial link to the popular boyband, One Direction.  The picture's there to boost hits. There.  Secret’s out. So if you’re reading this solely because of your allegiance to Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Niall (thank you, Wikipedia), prepare to be sorely disappointed; not just by this blog post, but also by the limp handshake that is One Direction’s career.  Our title is however relevant.
