Novak Djokovic may have had the fortune to find himself on the opposite side of the original draw to Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, but Withdrawal Wednesday at Wimbledon yesterday left Murray with the clearer run to the final. The Scot's highest seeded potential opponent before the final is clay court specialist Nicholás Almagro [15] after Federer [3], Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [6], and Marin Čilić [10] were all sent home in the second round.
There are, on the other hand, still many top players on Djokovic's side of the draw. He could meet Richard Gasquet [9] or Tomáš Berdych [7] in the quarter final stage, and he could face a rejuvenated Tommy Haas [13] before that. Then at the semi final stage he could face David Ferrer [4], Milos Raonic [17], Kei Nishikori [12], or Juan Martín del Potro [8].
It certainly looks good for the home favourite when written down like this - at least until the final. Murray himself claims he will resist the media excitement 'pretty easily' having seen Federer, a 'much better' player, humbled by 116-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky who played 'without fear'. But Wimbledon's already long list of injuries and giant killings should act as a warning to anyone about to utter those dreaded words: 'this could be his year'.
